On paper, this trade looked lopsided at best. Wood was having a great year saving games for the Cubs while Pena has struggled all year with his AVG and injuries. However, I needed some pop and I had 5 closers for 4 spots. Trust me, I tried to trade for a bigger bat. No one was biting on my offers of Edison Volquez or George Sherrill. That on top of the fact that in this particular public league half the teams have already quit. My options were extremely limited. So an owner came at me with Pena for Wood and I took it. With getting rid of Wood I simply slid Broxton into his spot. Then today comes the news that Wood is headed for the DL. Now, this DL stint is not due to any arm problems like has been the case in the past for Wood, but there may be a reason to try and sell high on Wood when he returns from the DL
Wood will miss a couple weeks with a blister on his throwing hand. Nothing to worry about right? This is the first year in a long time that Wood has been able to avoid any type of arm problem. I’m not saying it’s a lock he’ll eventually get hurt, but if you’ve got some other options or have a lead in the SV category (more closers are sure to pop up from here on out as well) it may be worth it to look at what you may be able to get. Aim high for a bat like Vlad or Rios.
